| A custom built entertainment unit for my new 16x9 HD-ready Projection TV! |
We were trying to find a place in our modestly sized living room to put this behemoth of a TV.
We really like the light-oak/white scheme which seems to be all the rage now-a-days, but did not want to spend $2000
on a nice oak unit. |
As of today (12/03/2001) it's not completed, but I estimate I will have about $500.00 in
materials once it's all done, plus, it will become an integral part of the house and have tons of storage space. |
I have tried to take pictures every few hours of work time. I chose a corner of my
living room 7' wide x 5' deep. The unit itself is 32" deep, which accommodates my 29" deep TV quite nicely. |
12/16/2001: Added page 2 and I'm like 99% done now. I did spend around $500.00 or so, and I must say that it
looks marvelous! Check it out on Page 2
|
Starting point: A corner of the living room too small to put a decent sized couch. It's
always been kind of wasted space anyway. We were going to put our chairs here, and have the TV on the opposite wall,
but in light of recent accomplishments, I think we made the right decision.

|
| Nathan the helper...He actually took up all the carpet tack-board all by himself! |
| Cut out the carpet and began to build the foundation which will be 12" off the floor. |
|
| Starting to frame in the forward facing part. The TV will go on the left, stereo components or the right. |
|
| More framing, and Nathan helping as usual. |
|
| The second one here shows the rounded corner. I just slit the dry-wall every inch then broke it over my bench. I think 5 gallons of mud won't be enough here... |
|
| These are the pockets 'round the corner for knick-knacks, etc. All corners will be bull-nosed.
Notice the cold air return. It will draw air under the TV hopefully alleviating some ventilation issues. |
|
| Showing the rounded corner on top, to match the bottom. It's only 8" tall here. Also, I have installed some pretty cool halogen lamps for effect.. |
|
| I have installed 2 10" deep drawers made from white Melamine on the bottom. I will probably replace the face of the drawer with white oak. |
|
| More framing, more dry-wall. Notice the 2 halogen lamps at the top. There will be an oak header 6" down from the top. |
|
| Hard to see here, but I've started to mud the bull-nose corners and the large corners. |
